Why SEO? Search Engine Optimization Explained

You might not know it, but Search Engine Optimization(SEO) controls almost every aspect of the way you surf the web. Via a complex combination of factors, many of which are kept secret, search engines have developed a method of ensuring that only the most relevant sites appear at the top of results pages. The sites which build themselves around what search engines like Google are looking for are the ones which succeed. The ones that don’t are doomed to forever languish on page 100 of search results, unknown to all but a handful of people. It’s simple- SEO is the secret to many a site’s success, and is an essential tool in the belt of any would-be web entrepreneur.

To understand why SEO is necessary, you need to look back a little in time toSEO see how search engines have come to be what they are today. Back in the internet’s Dark Ages, people got from page to page either via typing in a specific address, or by following links. This naturally made browsing the internet far from simple, as it meant that only sites which people were talking about were getting any hits. Search engines were developed as a way of making everything easier- people could now type in what they were looking for, and be presented with a list of sites that were relevant to their query.

But it wasn’t long before people started to exploit search engines. It was common for pages advertising something to include huge streams of text, all of it unrelated to the page content, in order to appear at the top of search results. To combat this, search engines spearheaded by Google started getting more complicated, assessing sites by looking for particular keyword densities (usually between 2-5% of the overall page content), amongst many other factors. Nowadays, this method has been perfected, ensuring that people are only presented with search results that are relevant to what they were looking for. The days of keyword spamming are, thankfully, behind us.

That’s not to say, though, that there’s nothing you can do to help boost your page rankings. As you might have figured out from what we’ve said already, one of the best ways of doing this is through maintaining the correct keyword density, as this shows that your pages really are about what they say they are. Choosing your keywords careful can give a big boost to your business. But there are also plenty of other factors which can help contribute to SEO, many of which are hidden to your average internet user. Meta tags in each page’s code play a key role, as do links between pages internal and external to your site. Most people aren’t going to have the expertise necessary to implement every factor involved with SEO, meaning they could be missing out on a lot of hits.
